LOVE STORY 8 ( THE OLD BREAKUP)

I moved with my mom recently because my dad was abusive. I am having a way better life but something major happened that kind of threw me off. I saw it coming but I ignored the bad feelings and went for it anyways. Let me rewind a bit. I am a Junior in High school and starting at a new school. I am making friends fast, getting good grades, and playing some sports like football and basketball. A few months into the school year this girl started talking to me. Her name is Destiny. She is gorgeous, funny, and gets me. We became really close over the months and my feelings for her got stronger. I decided to make my move.

I asked her on a date and she agreed. We were going to dinner then to watch the homecoming game. I wasn't on the football team at the time so I could do this. I saved up over a hundred dollars to take her somewhere nice. The day we were supposed to go on a date she texts me and says "Sorry I can't make it. Something came up. Maybe another time." I was crushed but I understood. I decided to go to the game anyway. When I got there she was there... with a guy and they were holding hands. She saw me and we looked at each other for a good minute then I decided just to leave.

The following Monday I ignored her. I did this for about a week. Finally she apologized and I accepted that she was with him and we became close friends again. . Her BF broke up with her and she was devastated. I of course was her shoulder to cry on. About a month later we started getting closer. I wasn't going to make a move because I didn't want a repeat of last time so I ignored it for a few months.

She has an older sister who was a few months pregnant at that time. One day she told me her sister was having a baby shower a few weeks from then and wanted to know if I wanted to come and meet her family. I agreed and was excited for a while. However we have some more to go before we get there.

Valentines day was a few days away so I decided to be cute and ask her out. I brought her a teddy bear and asked her the question. She said yes and it was the greatest days of my life. A week before the baby shower I found out my mom and step dad had to work that day and couldn't take me. They could only pick me up after. Of course I panicked but decided to hit up some friends and got a ride. That day I was so nervous I couldn't sit still. My friends picked me up but didn't make it any better. They kept asking me "Are you nervous?" and "We are almost there how are you feeling?" I just kept playing it cool and expected them to be inside giving me a chance to meet them one by one. Nope. Wrong.

We pulled up and my door was on the far side from her house. I saw a bunch of people on the porch and that seemed to be were the party was. I started shaking and opened my door. Everyone started staring because no one knew who I was and couldn't see me yet. I stood there paralyzed before finally my friends made me move. I closed the door and walked out around the vehicle. This is what I hear yelled "Oh my goodness it's Destiny's boyfriend!" Then Destiny comes running out and hugs me. So I obviously hug her then I hold her hand and walk up there smiling. I go around shaking hands and introducing myself and meet everyone on the porch. Her step mom and dad were nice and not at all like I expected.

We sat down and started eating and playing games just having a good time. After a few hours the party died down so Destiny, her friend Anna, and I go into her living room to watch some movies. We put on Pineapple express (a stoner movie basically) and I put my arm around Destiny. Her dad came in and watched it for a little while before going to his room. We talked and had a good time before my mom pulled in. I walked outside with Destiny and my mom came up wanting to meet the parents. So they came out and chatted for a few minutes.

Finally I hugged Destiny and said my good byes and we left. About 10 minutes after leaving I got a text from Destiny. "Hey, I don't think this is going to work we should just be friends." I was once again hurt. I sat back and didn't say a word to my mom. I texted back. "So that's it? We are breaking up?" She texted "Yeah. Sorry." I didn't text back or say a word. When we got home I went to my room and went to bed. It was about 5 in the afternoon but I didn't care. The next day was Saturday. I stayed in my room all day and only ate dinner.

I got another text from her "Hey are you there? I'm sorry again. Are we still friends?" I ignored the text and laid down listening to music crying softly so I wouldn't have to tell my mom. Sunday I did the same thing all day. My mom walked in and asked what was wrong. I shook my head and left it at that. She left me alone and I continued to be depressed.

The next day at school everyone who tried to talk to me I ignored. Including her. That continued for a few days. I came home everyday and went straight to my room. My mom finally caught me crying one day and made me tell her. She looked shocked and said "Why? I thought everything went good. No wonder you have been acting weird. I am so sorry." I burst into tears hearing all that and she comforted me. Finally I got my act together and started talking to my friends. Ignoring Destiny.

This happened a few weeks ago and it still really hurts. I don't know how to get my mind off of it but I know I have to some how. She keeps trying to talk to me and telling me it was her not me but telling others a different story. I am crushed but trying to look like it doesn't bother me. I need help but I don't know what to do.

FESTIVALS OF KOLKATA

Kolkata is a colourful city in terms of everything and Bengalis just need one reason or another to celebrate. This fact of the region is and has been being glorified in various aspects of the print and cinematic media. The festive fervour is perhaps one of the many things that highlight Kolkata, making it a place one of its kind. The beautiful township is known for its many festivals which keep its residents busy throughout the year. The entire atmosphere is painted completely different during the festivals and there is a lot of commotion and rush all around.  There are a plethora of festivals that take place throughout the year, like Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja etc. There are also a lot of lesser known ones which are popular in the Bengal region and which assume different forms in different regions of the country and we will try to make you aware of those. So here we go on with the list of Bengali festivals or rather the festivals of Kolkata that take place throughout the year:

1. Saraswati Puja (Usually in the months of January or February)

Perhaps one of the unique celebrations of Kolkata is the day celebrating the Homecoming of the Hindu Goddess of Learning, Goddess Saraswati. This is usually celebrated on the fifth day of Hindu month of Magha, known as Vasant Panchami in Northern parts of the country and Saraswati Puja in West Bengal predominately. This day is dedicated to the Goddess as a day when all the study related things should have an auspicious beginning. In Kolkata people consider this day to be very fortunate for their children to start writing for the first time. This day is also marked by small girls wearing colourful saris and going out on the streets to visit the richly decorated pandals of Goddess Saraswati.

2. Basanti Durga Puja (spring season- mostly during March)

Although the more known celebration of the Homecoming of Goddess Durga is during the month of September- October, scriptures have it that originally the Puja was performed in the spring season. This form of worship of Goddess Durga was the only time that the Goddess was called upon the earth but nowadays the ?Shardiya Durga Puja ? has become more famous. But the Basanti Durga Puja is still very famous in the Kolkata region. Considering it to be a miniature Durga Puja, the city comes alive with the sound of conch shells and brightly lit pandals with extensively decorated idols of the Goddess and people wearing colourful attires and dancing to the beat of ?dhakis?.

3. Poila Boishakh (usually on the 14th or 15th of April)

Poila Boishakh or the first day of Baisakh is the first day of a Bengali calendar year. The day is often known as Bengali New Year. This day marks the beginning of a new year for a Bengali household and thus calls for a celebration. People make extensive preparations for this day, buying new clothes, preparing extensive dishes at home and most importantly offering prayers to Gods and Goddesses. This day is very special for the Bengalis. On this day the traders start their new accounting books, the ceremony is commonly known as ?Hal Khata?.

4. Jamai Shoshti (usually in the months of May or June)

Source www.visionoflove92.blogspot.com

This beautiful commemoration celebrates the complicated but underrated relationship between a mother in law and her son in law. This is a day to bring the warmth back in the relationships and proves to be yet another reason to celebrate the blessing that is life. On this special day, the son in law visits his in-laws home where a grand party is organized for him, containing people from the household or more acquaintances as they want to mark the occasion. The mother in law cooks extensive and mouth-watering dishes for her son in law and no celebration in the Bengali household can be complete without food. The day is also marked with giving gifts to the son in law from his in-laws too and also being blessed by them with having a long and prosperous life ahead.

5. Durga Puja (September to October)

Source

Perhaps one of the grandest festivals of the state, Durga Puja of Kolkata is famous worldwide for the huge celebrations and the faith that comes with the victory of Good over Evil. The festival is a massive celebration in the name of Goddess Durga who defeated the shape-shifting demon Mahisasura after a ten-day battle. The day is known as Vijay Dashmi. The celebrations are truly on a different level altogether with roads being ten times more crowded than the usual (mind you the usual crowd there is unusually large!)with people going out for their last minute shopping sessions and for sightseeing the extensive pandals that flock the city. The city sure has some of the best artistically made pandals which draw attention from all around the world. The city loses itself during the 10 days of celebration.

6. Lakshmi Puja (a week after Vijay Dashmi)

Source

Lakshmi Puja is the celebration of the homecoming for the Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi. The festival is entirely restricted to the Bengalis since Hindus apart from Bengalis do this Puja during Diwali- the festival of lights. This is usually done at home by a priest or by own and offerings are made to Goddess Lakshmi and prayers are made to bring wealth and prosperity to their homes.

7. Kali Puja (late October or November)

Sourcewww.visionoflove92.blogspot.com

Celebrated nearly twenty days after Durga Puja this festival is perhaps the other largest festival of Kolkata apart from Durga Puja. Celebrated in the honour of Goddess Kali, this festival is marked by chanting mantras during nighttime which goes up till dawn. The Deity is adorned with garlands of hibiscuses and offered sweets, rice and lentils although animal sacrifices are also made at a few places, now has been greatly reduced. The festival is celebrated when the rest of the country celebrates Diwali- the festival of lights.

8. Bhai Phota (Around November)

Source

This festival is celebrated in Kolkata as a substitute for the Hindu Raksha Bandhan although it is somewhat different. In this, the sister puts a ?tika? on the forehead of her brother while muttering incantations and then feeds him sweets. The sister prays for the long life of her brother and also that he finds the strength to fight wrongdoings. This is the Bengali version of celebration cherishes the bond between a brother and sister.
These are some of the festivals which Kolkata is really famous for and these help in realizing the importance and significance of festivals in a Bengali household. Kolkata is full of life and gusto. The mere numbers of celebrations that take place throughout the year are a mere testament to the everlasting and undying spirit of the people around here. It is indeed a remarkable place to be in!

He loved his horses more than he loved his job and family and his favourite one was a pearl white horse named Pride. She was known as the Queen of the Tracks and she won many races, fame and prizes for her master. But with age, she was fading and her last race was the Annual Calcutta Derby. Pride lost the race and George Williams lost his fortune. Although it is one of the busiest metro stations, it can be termed as the “Paradise of Suicide”. The last train is said to be haunted and people have seen eerie shadows and weird images moving and then disappearing in the gust of wind. Take the last train, and Calcuttans say that you won’t see a single living soul at this haunted station when the train pulls out of the station.

His body was ripped apart and it was his wife who visited Afghanistan, assembled the left over parts of his body, returned to Kolkata and buried it here in the Lower Circular Road Cemetery. In case anyone narrates his story near his grave, the huge tree above the grave starts shivering.

11. Hastings House

Hastings House, A haunted place in Kolkata

This one is yet another haunted place in Kolkata which you must surely visit if you aren’t a faint-hearted person. There is a rumour that one could hear the footsteps of a person, supposedly Warren Hastings, who come to the place in search of his folder. That folder contained some old papers that could have saved him from getting impeached in London.  Presently it’s the Women’s College of Calcutta University. Some students claim that they have seen a man riding a horse visit the place.
Another story about this place goes like that there was a boy who lost his life while he was playing football so his spirit also haunts this house. Students have suffered from terrible injuries when they play football. So, if you are planning a visit, make sure you do not have a football with you.

12. Wipro Office, Salt Lake

Wipro Office, A famous haunted place in Kolkata
Wipro Office, Salt Lake (Source)
The Wipro Office is one of those haunted places in Kolkata whose stories you’ll hear young people narrate, rather than the older generation. It is now that Salt Lake has become the IT hub of Kolkata, but once upon a time it was a part of the Kolkata wetlands. The office of Wipro is supposed to be built on a graveyard and the local residents of that place claim that they have seen strange visions in the darkest hours during the night. People are strictly advised not to wander in the Third Floor of the Tower 3 and the floor is shut all most all the time as it is haunted by many ghosts. People working the graveyard shifts in this office have often complained of hearing and seeing things whenever they leave to use the lifts or step out of the buildings.
The city of joy is full of dark secrets and mysteries on every wall and every street. There are many more haunted places in Kolkata apart from these few. The National Museum, the Clive House and many other places have reported paranormal activities in the city. No one knows how much truth is there in these stories, so why don’t you just go and explore the places, if you are not afraid!
